Retezat, Day 4 – Judele peak – Slaveiu ridge, Aug 2016

On day 4 we hiked to Judele peak, and then did a loop on Slaveiu ridge. Unlike the previous days, this day was sunny and the views were amazing, definitely worth checking the panos out.
This track is not marked, and it’s quite rocky and exposed, so if you choose to go this way, be extra carefull.
We left the camp at Bucura lake and started climbing towards Judele peak. This is the first lake we come across, Bucurelu lake.
Higher up, we go round another 2 lakes, Florica and Viorica.

On our way to Bucura camp we stopped for a break close to Ana lake. This was our last day on this trip. The following day we packed camp and left the same way we came, through Peleaga glade.

Retezat, Day 3 – Retezat peak , Aug 2016

On day 3 of this tour we planned to do a hike to Retezat peak, so we left the Bucura lake base camp quite early.
. Here we already overcame Bucura pass and are climbing to Bucura 1 peak.

After a sustained climb we arrive on Retezat peak. With our luck, just in time for the clouds.
On our way back we take a detour through Bucurei gate (Poarta Bucurei).

On day 2 we hiked to Peleaga peak (yellow cross mark), then Papusa peak and went back to the base camp at Bucura lake through Bucura pass.

Peleaga peak, at 2509m, is the tallest peak in the Retezat mountains
Papusa peak, 2508m alt, just 1 meter less than Peleaga. Unfortunately surrounded by clouds.

Custura Bucurei peak at 2359m alt. From here we descend to Bucura pass and to our basecamp close to the lake. This continues on Day 3.

Retezat, Day 1 – Bucura camp, Aug 2016
This post is part of a tour that spans several days. On day 1 we hiked to Bucura lake, our base camp. After pitching up the tend we did a bit of exploration around the lake.
A fitting end – a colorfull evening – at Bucura Lake, Retezat, Whis will continue on day 2.

Ciucas, Bratocea ridge, Dec 2016

Ceahlau, Fantanele chalet, March 2014
For Easter 2014 we decided to take a trip to northern Romania – Ceahlau mountain range
On the track to Fantanele chalet from Durau resort and it’s obvious winter is still here..
A couple of frendly dogs show us the track.
Arrived at Fantanele chalet, everything is very still under the snow.
Nucan glade. We can’t see the markings that well behind branches full of snow but the dogs are never wrong.
On the track from Fantanele chalet to Duruitoarea waterfall. Most of the way is through the forest.
Finally arrived at Duruitoarea waterfall, reduced to a whisper in winter. From here we return to Durau resort.
Ciucas, Zaganu ridge, June 2015

Ciucas, Bratocea – Ciucas peak, March 2019
After a difficult hike from Bratocea pass we arrive on Ciucas peak at 1954m altitude.
On the return track, on Bratocea peak, having one last look towards Ciucas.
